ADVOCACY CENTERS

Our pioneering efforts for the promotion of our core values make us truly exceptional. We are a leading advocate for the promotion of truth, justice, peace, women’s rights, and the integrity of creation through our Miriam Advocacy Centers (MACs): Environmental Studies Institute (ESI), Center for Peace Education (CPE), and Women and Gender Institute (WAGI). Through the years, the MACs have contributed immensely to curriculum development, research and training, policy analysis and advocacy, community outreach and networking. Thus, your educational experience becomes even more meaningful by extending learning beyond the classroom to give you a broader appreciation of your discipline and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility and awareness of social realities.

Center for Peace Education

The Center for Peace Education promotes a culture of peace through peace education and advocacy. To reach peace, we teach peace. Peace courses are offered in the College and peace concepts and values are infused in certain subjects in MC’s basic education units where students are trained in conflict resolution and peer mediation. Annually, Miriam College celebrates the International Day of Peace and the Mindanao Week of Peace. On both occasions, members of the community organize activities that raise awareness on peace issues of the day. During the Mindanao Week of Peace, community members raise funds to support peace-related causes as well as our twin school in Mindanao, the Rajah Muda High School.

Environmental Studies Institute

The Environmental Studies Institute (ESI) is a pioneer in school-based education and advocacy for the environment. It traces its roots in the early 70s when environmental issues were integrated into the curriculum of Maryknoll College. Since then, various innovations have led to the integration of environmental education in all academic units of Miriam College. It has also led to partnerships with both government and non-government organizations for environmental advocacy and with communities for environmental protection and community-based resource management.

Women and Gender Institute

The Women and Gender Institute (WAGI) is Miriam College’s specialized center for research, training, and advocacy on women’s rights, gender equality and non-sexist learning in support of the leadership of young women and students.

WAGI is a Filipino word, which means “win” in English. The term epitomizes the long term objective of the Women and Gender Institute, which is to achieve women’s empowerment and gender equality in society as this will, in the end, result in a win-win situation for both women and men.
