August 27 was truly a special day for Miriam College. From coffee table books to screenplays, President Dr. Rosario O. Lapus graciously accepted gifts to the Maryknoll/Miriam College Family of Authors (MMCFA) from our dear alumni authors and friends. The MMCFA is a special initiative of alumna Marla Yotoko-Chorengel (HS 1959), who has spearheaded this project which gathers various works of alumni writers. The MMCFA is a growing literature collection of books, articles, screenplays and other written work.
Despite the postponement of classes, the school was blessed with good weather as it welcomed various authors and gift-givers to the Presentation of Books for the Miriam College Library and Authors Corner. Led by Marla Yotoko-Chorengel and supported by Rita Ledesma and Lolita Delgado-Fansler, the school organized an event to formally accept new additions to the library and acknowledge the generosity of our givers.
The Presentation of Books started with a gift from Malu Antonio-Veloso, “The Architectural Legacy of Pablo S. Antonio”, edited by Sylvia Roces-Montilla. The latter also gave the school several books of her own. The Ortigas Family, represented by children Marga, Ines, and Anton, presented six books from the Heritage Books Collection edited by their mother, Maritoni Campa-Ortigas (RIP). The school then received the books written by our alumni – “50 Years of Hollywood” by Gemma Cruz-Araneta, “When Turtles Come Home” by Victoria Bantug-Hoffarth, and “Finding Me” by Evelyn Golangco-Cu-Unjieng (RIP). Baby R. Nebrida then presented the school with a copy of her screenplay “Across the Crescent Moon.” Last but not least, VP for Academic Affairs Dr. Jasmin Nario-Galace presented the book she co-authored with Dr. Loreta Navarro-Castro entitled “Peace Education: A Pathway to a Culture of Peace.”
Miriam College is truly grateful to the vision of the Maryknoll/Miriam College Family of Authors and their commitment to promote, honor and preserve the legacy of our alumni authors. We invite the MC community to pay the Authors’ Corner a visit when they find themselves on campus.
The Authors Corner can be found in found in the second floor of the college library located in the SMT building. For inquiries and donations, you may contact the Alumni Engagement Office at 4359266.
