MISMO Update on MC COVID-19 Response (1 May 2020)

Dear MC Community,

This is to share with you some of the latest updates in relation to the different form of responses being undertaken by our institution in relation to the COVID-19 crisis. The call for monetary donations that will be given as a form of assistance to our outsourced personnel, elicited the generosity of the different stakeholders of Miriam College, parents, students, alumni, employees and other individuals who are concern with the plight of those who are affected by this pandemic. So far, the total donations that we have collected is P306, 600.00. The total available amount for assistance is P406,600.00. This includes the P100,000.00 from the MISMO Disaster Response Fund. The breakdown is as follows:

From MISMO Disaster Response Fund: P100,000.00
Salary Deductions: P165,300.00
Bank Donations: P91,300.00
MCLS PTC: P50,000.00
Total: P406,600.00

HR and MISMO will decide on how the amount will be allocated and this will be given to our Service Providers for distribution.

Miriam Identity, Spirituality and Mission Office (MISMO) would like to acknowledge the generosity of Maryknoll College Batch 1974. Through the Alumni Engagement Office, Ms. Melita Sta. Maria – Thomeczek, coordinator for Batch 1974, was able to link with MISMO for their batch’s desire to send help to the poorest of the poor communities. In response to one of the solicitation letters sent to MISMO, College Batch 1974 donated fifty thousand pesos (Php 50,000) to Sto. Domingo Parish in Talim Island. The donation was received by its parish priest, Fr. Rommel Felizardo, who used to regularly celebrate daily masses at the College Chapel. The donation was able to buy food packs composed of rice and grocery items. Last April 26, the food packs were distributed to 100 families in Brgy. Sapang, Talim Island.

In addition, with the permission of our VPAA, Dr. Jasmin Nario-Galace, the following excerpt from the report of the HEU Executive Council is shared for the information of the whole MC Community. This illustrates the various ways in which our institution seeks to respond to the crisis that baffle us.
Beyond academic matters, we wish to let you know that members of the Maryknoll/Miriam College community, including its alumni, have been doing heartwarming work to reach out to those most affected by the crisis. Some of these are:

  • The launch of a donation project to help support our partner communities as well as outsourced personnel (security, janitorial and maintenance, and café staff) by school personnel;
  • The mobilization of resources to provide protective equipment (PPEs) for 29 hospitals, food for medical frontliners and hospital staff, food for depressed and marginalized communities, purchasing assistance for senior citizens, and financial support to medical foundations and daily wage earners by alumni of different batches;
  • The production of a vlog series entitled, “From Breakdown to Breakthrough” to help people build resilience during the Covid-19 pandemic by the Center for Peace Education and Family Studies, Department of Communication, and Department of Psychology of the College of Arts and Sciences; and
  • The offering of first line assistance to families of MC students through a free online “Coaching for Families in Distress” aimed at promoting holistic health and wellness and developing resiliency during the pandemic by the Ph.D. Family Studies Program.

We don’t know until when the health crisis will continue to ravage the country and its people. But let us do our best to imbibe the virtues espoused by Mother Mary Joseph, the founder of the Maryknoll congregation, which continue to guide us now and always: Christ-like charity, selflessness, heroic generosity, prudent zeal, and an adaptable disposition.

-The HEU Executive Council
