College Alums Advocate for Peace at the UN for Voices of SDG16+

Miriam College is proud to have two of its young alumnae promote our core value of Peace at the recently concluded side events in line with the United Nations’ High Level Political Forum at the UN Headquarters in New York. College Alumnae Sophia Dianne “Soda” Garcia (CSC 2000, GS 2007, HS 2011 and COL 2015) and Bianca Pabotoy (COL 2017), participated in the Voices of SDG16+ which focused on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

The Alumni Engagement Office and the Maryknoll/Miriam College Alumni Association finished the final leg of their joint “Welcome, Alumni!” activity which introduced freshly minted MC college graduates into the vibrant world of alumni Knollers. One of the highlights of the day’s program was a talk by Menchu Genato-Henson to help prepare the graduates as the school sends them off to the world of work.

“Indeed, we have a long way to go.”  These were the words of Sophia Dianne C. Garcia (GS 2007, HS 2001, College 2015) in her call to action at the United Nations Security Council meeting in April 2019 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325.  In her remarks before the UN Security Council, Sophia highlighted the challenge of increasing women’s participation in peace building in the Philippines.
