Nineteen students and two faculty members from Hanshin University, Seoul, South Korea visited Miriam College for the 2018 Mutual Understanding Program (MUP) last February 18-24.
This year, the MUP focused on Child Development Education and Positive and Environmental Psychology. The program included activities and classroom sessions to enhance cross-cultural interaction and cooperation while forging long-lasting friendships. The sessions participated in by students from Hanshin University included Philippine Studies with Mark “Mao” Rovillos, Environmental Psychology with Dr. Donna Reyes, Art and Culture with Joseph Renta, Positive Psychology with Dr. Ronnie Motilla, Design Thinking and Child Study Center Immersion with Marie Rose Yuzon, and Problem-Based Learning with Dr. Trixie Sison.
Unique to this year’s program was a history and cultural tour in Quezon City facilitated by the Quezon City Local Government, tour of Old Manila facilitated by CBEA faculty Jay Arididon and selected Leisure, Travel and Management students.
The guests, together with volunteer students from the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Education, also visited the school’s community partner in Laiban, Rizal. They were given the chance to play with the kids and share their culture to the community. To symbolize the two schools’ partnership was a tree planting ceremony.
The trip to Laiban, Rizal was made possible with the help of the Environmental Studies Institute (ESI) through Dr. Carlo Garcia. The week-long activity was a great success as goals to enhance global citizenship and mutual understanding between these two schools, cultures, and countries were achieved.
This year’s program marks the second year of the MUP. In November 2017, students from the Department of Psychology and Child Development Education participated in a similar program in Seoul, South Korea organized by Hanshin University. This coming October 2018, MC students are scheduled to participate in the next round in Seoul, South Korea.
