Good morning everyone.
Today we are very pleased to welcome to Miriam College His Excellency, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, President of the Republic of India.
We are deeply honored by your visit and delighted with the precious gift you have endowed upon us – the bronze bust of the great Mahatma Gandhi – a gift that will inspire, inform, and spur our students to act more vigorously in pursuit of Peace.
For 3 decades now, Miriam College has been on the forefront of national and global efforts to promote true and lasting peace. Our Center for Peace Education, founded and led by distinguished alumna and former Miriam College President Dr. Loreta Castro, (herself a recipient of several peace awards), is dedicated to this cause.
Peace is a core value clearly articulated in our school motto and lived out by our community: Miriam College for Truth, Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation. They are woven into the very fiber of our school culture.
Our campus is a Zone of Peace. Our mission is to teach our students to think as conscious and critical citizens, to be engaged in ethical and social concerns, and to equip and dare them to become effective change agents for a better world. Training and capacity-building of disempowered communities have been the advocacy work of our 3 Centers.
Our latest researches and grants – especially those from US-AID & the United Board of Higher Ed in Asia - are devoted to issues of peace, justice, and inclusion, in reimagining the role of a Woman, and in providing her with a strong voice and a seat at the peace table.
Peace is often elusive. We think we are there, but we encounter forces that impede our way forward.
But as the story of Mahatma Gandhi, the Man of Peace, has shown, we shall overcome in the end. It is important to remain focused, invigorated, and optimistic. Your gift will help us in this process.
Gandhi’s example of perseverance teaches us that patience, renewed commitment and a true belief in peace are important for its success and continuity.
We hope that today’s event will result in other ways we can partner together to achieve our common goal of arriving at lasting peace through education.
Indeed, this is such a propitious moment. My successor, the next President of Miriam College, was a renowned Ambassador to India. With her diplomatic skills and international network, she will be ready to work on this issue with you.
Thank you and we welcome Your Excellency once again to Miriam College.
