In the span of two weeks, Team Miriam College Environment a.ka. Team MC Envi, took part in two Hackathon events that aimed to address some of the pressing and urgent environmental and climate challenges the country is facing. Team MC Envi bagged top awards in the Australia Alumni Communities Philippines’ Sustainability Hackathon and in the Impact Hackathon on Climate Change of Impact Hub Manila.
Last 17 July 2021, in the Impact Hackathon on Climate Change of Impact Hub Manila, Team MC Envi pitched the project titled: LoCaL™ App or the Low Carbon Lifestyle App that provides solutions and rewards to reduce the carbon footprint of individuals. The LoCaL™ App provides the carbon footprint of the food that people usually buy and helps them make choices on how every person can reduce their carbon footprint. As people reduce their carbon footprint, they earn rewards on future purchases. The LoCaL™ App also allows producers, farmers, growers, and sellers to register and sell their products directly; provide consumers with food choices that can lower their carbon footprint; show which products can be purchased within a local area, thereby reducing emissions from delivery. As more consumers use the LoCaL™ App and choose low carbon products, more producers are encouraged to become responsible producers and sell products that also have low CO2 equivalent. This could lead to a reduction in carbon emissions from our food consumption and production.
The LoCaL™ App of Team MC Envi was awarded 1st Runner-up in the Impact Hackathon on Climate Change. Members of Team MC Envi included Dr. Phares Parayno, Dr. Alma Regalado, Engr. Rudy Roque, Ms. Graciela Castillo, and Mr. Jerome L. Montemayor, MSc, PhD Candidate.
While last 9 July 2021, in the Australia Alumni Communities Philippines’ Sustainability Hackathon, Team MC Envi pitched the project titled: Waste2Prosperity, Way2Sustainability™ otherwise known as Ways2Sustainabiity™, which is an integrated, complete, holistic, circular, and sustainable solution to an everyday waste problem – human wastes and sludge-wastewater. Ways2Sustainabiity™ works with people and the community to address the need for clean water, a clean environment, and a sustainable future. It supports local government units in fulfilling their mandated duties to manage wastewater and other waste such as plastic wastes, as well as support them in realizing their dream of transforming their locale into a sustainable city/sustainable community. Cooperatives and social enterprises are supported by Ways2Sustainabiity™ in meeting the need to pivot to a post-Covid future; to be more active in the sustainability building effort of their locality and of the country; and, to ensure triple bottom line (people, planet, and prosperity). Ways2Sustainabiity™ support farmers toward reinvent themselves to be able to pivot to the new normal brought about by the changing climate and the Covid-19 Pandemic. Ways2Sustainabiity™ helps farmers to pursue sustainable, biodiversity-friendly, and nature-based farming practices accessible and affordable. Ways2Sustainabiity™ helps consumers have better options for healthy food. -- By Jerome L. Montemayor
