MC IS Student Among the Chosen Participants for the 3rd Voice of ASEAN-Korean Youths

Carriza Arambulo, a fourth-year BA International Studies student, was among the 40 participants chosen to attend the 3rd Voice of ASEAN-Korean Youths held on September 16, 2021 via Zoom. It is a program under the ASEAN-Korea Summit with the theme “We Take the Lead on Climate Change!” Participants were able to share their thoughts with fellow ASEAN citizens and listen to a lecture by an expert in the field.

The issue of climate change in ASEAN was discussed by Marinel Ubaldo, the Philippine Country Coordinator for the 16th UN Climate Change Conference of Youth (COY). She defines environmental advocacy means as a movement with a common goal to bring solutions to environmental problems. The forum focused on the importance of addressing the climate crisis to raise awareness, amend legislation towards a greener perspective, and protect communities from negative impacts. Carriza, together with the other participants, emphasized that while individual actions are important to address the climate crisis, such as volunteering and shifting to sustainable products, there are other bigger factors to be considered, among which include the industries, unsustainable consumption, and the COVID-19 pandemic that exacerbate the climate crisis and natural disasters in ASEAN. Carriza believes that this will require a great amount of support from diverse actors along with the integration of the principles of accessibility, inclusivity, and collaboration in the identifying solutions to environmental concerns.

“As a youth in ASEAN and a citizen of the world, we must share the responsibility to protect the only planet we call our home”, says Carriza.
