Master of Education in Special Needs and Inclusive Education

Thesis Track

The Master of Education in Special Needs and Inclusive Education Thesis Program is a practice-based degree designed to comprehensively prepare and update the competencies of teachers seeking to address the needs of an increasingly diverse student population. By focusing on pedagogical knowledge and skills, the program aims to produce reflective, dynamic and confident teachers of persons with disabilities.

This program responds to the call to sufficiently address learner diversity in general education settings, and takes root in a rights-based perspective to inclusion.

Program Goals
  • Equip teachers with knowledge and skills in curriculum and instruction in order to accommodate learners with developmental disabilities in traditional and/or inclusive classrooms
  • Develop confidence in teaching students in inclusive settings, and inspire a change in attitude and practices among stakeholders in traditional environments
  • Enable critical reflection of current frameworks and practices in inclusive settings

What Will I Study?

This course enhances your skills in analyzing curriculum designs and curriculum development models.
This course provides opportunities for you to analyze instructional theories, instructional design models, and instructional approaches.
This course analyzes the legal, historical, social, and medical frameworks of disability studies. Philosophies, theories, and interventions specific to special needs and inclusive education are also highlighted.
This course presents an analytic perspective of the Philippine framework for inclusive education which covers learners with disabilities, gifts and talents, learners in difficult circumstances, Muslim learners, and learners from among Indigenous Peoples.
This course reiterates a critical analysis of frameworks for inclusive classrooms, with focus on practical accommodations, curricular modifications, classroom adaptations, and differentiated instruction.
You will be taught how to analyze and assess cases of learners with additional needs, taking into consideration the requirements of traditional and inclusive settings.
This course teaches you to examine, implement, and evaluate administration and supervision principles specific to inclusive educational settings.
Analysis and application of behavior management principles and research-validated practices are the goals of this course.
This course enables you to analyze the nature of exceptional abilities, specific learning needs, and educational objectives of learners with orthopedic needs, blindness, and deafness. Effective instructional strategies that can be implemented in traditional and/or inclusive environments are highlighted.
In this course, you will learn a minimum of 500 sign words and affixes used in daily communication. Lessons are designed for activities such as fingerspelling, visual-gestural exercises, application of sign principles and expressive and receptive signing.
This course engages you in a critical survey of methods in educational research and data analysis techniques appropriate for teacher research, setting of research directions and identification of research ideas in education.

This program is implemented using a modular delivery mode.

    Comprehensive Exam

  • The thesis comes in the form of Action Research and is accomplished as you take the different specialization courses. You are assigned to a mentor and an adviser (content and process specialists) who will closely supervise the research process and writing of the paper.

    Students who are not currently teaching will be immersed in partner schools.
