Kerma Hji Abdulla, one of the participants of the Political Participation Training conducted by WAGI, won the recently concluded local elections held on May 2016. She won as councilor in the Municipality of Tongkil, Sulu. She said, “my knowledge on women’s leadership widened, especially in relation to good governance. It helped me strengthen my knowledge, skills and determination in continuing my advocacy for peace. I am hoping that I will continue to be part of WAGI and WPC journey from local to regional to national levels, especially when it comes to women’s leadership.”
Although her winning the elections cannot solely be attributed to the training, her participation in the WAGI WPS project was an added value on how she was able to look at different issues with a gender and security perspective. Her direct link and engagement with her community also helped a lot in her chances of winning and the training that she attended supplemented her existing capabilities in dealing with them and hopefully in doing her legislative responsibilities during her term of office.
