2019 Golden, Sapphire and Silver Jubilarians gift MC with scholarships and improved facilities

Homecoming is not over yet. Jubilarian classes HS 1994 (Silver), HS 1974 (Sapphire) and HS 1969 (Golden) have come home to MC yet again, this time to gift their alma mater with funds they have raised for their jubilee celebrations this year.

Silver and Gold

Last October, Silver and Golden Jubilarians led by class representatives Rebie Ramoso and Manette Melicor Yap respectively, held a joint turnover ceremony to give their gifts to Miriam. HS 1994 donated seed money for the construction of the Basic Education Unit’s Math Laboratory, while HS 1969, led by Manette, gifted the school with money for scholarships. HS 69 also gave two books written by classmate Alma Patist-Clutario, for inclusion in the Maryknoll/Miriam College Family of Authors. These gifts are in addition to a previous donation given by classmate Veron Peralejo for the improvement of HEU facilities. Both Silver and Gold classes also donated an amount for the improvement the MMJ Sports Court. The gifts were received by outgoing President Dr. Charito Lapus.

It was a great way for the two classes to reunite, as both classes have forged friendships during the Homecoming. Rebie showed the same day edit of the event, and summarized the entire Homecoming experience with 3 Cs – Collaboration, Connection and Collaboration. Everyone was in agreement that the journey leading up to Homecoming Day was just as important as the day itself because of how the different classes bonded during practices and meetings. It was a day full of laughter and reminiscing, showing us how the warm the spirit of MC continues to be for our alumni.

In a separate ceremony this December, Sapphire Jubilarians led by class representatives Charimen Araneta, Nena Rivera and Mac Gepuela gave their gift for the benefit of Miriam Adult Education (MAE) scholarships and the MMJ Sports Court improvement, which was received by incumbent President Amb. Laura Quiambao del Rosario on behalf of the school.

During the presentation, MAE Principal Glenda Villanueva shared the value of supporting MAE students’ daily needs, especially transportation. “These students walk long distances on their way to school in order to save money for food,” shares Glenda. “Your donation will definitely help augment this daily expense so that it will be easier for our students to go to and from campus everyday, and still have money to spare for their meals.” The class donation will benefit 21 students for two school years, from Junior High, Senior High and Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) programs.

BEU Director and Middle School Principal Luwi Tampinco emphasized how much our athletes need improved sports facilities. “At present, the court they train in after school doubles as a dismissal area, making it a safety concern for both our varsity players and students,” Luwi shares. “An improved sports facility where our teams are free from all these distractions will really help them focus on their game.” The MC Middle School varsity teams continue to bring home medals in various sports like basketball, badminton, football, pep squad, soft ball, swimming, taekwondo, and volleyball.

Miriam College is extremely grateful to all alumni classes and individuals who continue to give back to their alma mater. These precious resources reflect your passion in helping the school sustain (and even improve!) the quality of education Miriam College is committed to deliver.

Postscript: Sapphire’s gift for the sports court will be combined with the contributions of HS 1994 and HS 1969 for the same purpose. But we still have a long way to go in realizing our dream of a state of the art sports facility.
