MC gives updates on Safer Spaces on campus in first ever Alumni Town Hall

MC officials updated the alumni community on MC’s initiatives in establishing safer spaces on campus during the first ever Alumni Town Hall organized by the Alumni Engagement Office last October 22 via Zoom.

The Alumni Town Hall was an occasion for dialogue between the alumni community and MC officials on how Miriam College can better provide safer learning spaces for students and employees. It was the last of a series of town halls held with various stakeholders of Miriam College. These sessions gave students, parents, faculty, staff and alumni a venue to be updated on MC’s initiatives in response to the #MCHSDoBetter issue and to gather their perspectives and recommendations on how to make Miriam College a safer space for all.

The Alumni Town Hall was moderated by alumna Carla Villanueva-Yaptinchay (GS ’89, HS ‘93). It began with updates from the Truth and Justice Committee (TJC) given by TJC Chair, Atty. Gabriela Roldan-Conception (HS ’81). This was her first public appearance as Chair of the TJC.

Director for Human Resources Dr. Noel C. Racho followed with a presentation on the school’s enhancements in its policies, processes and mechanisms on anti-sexual harassment, child protection, anti-bullying and use of social media. He also mentioned the establishment of Safeline, a helpline which will be another mechanism for reporting cases of abuse on campus.

Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Jasmin Nario-Galace (COL ’85) then discussed faculty initiatives and academic programs that help help reinforce the promotion of safe spaces in Miriam College.

Last but not least, school president Amb. Laura Q. Del Rosario (COL’68) announced the establishment of the Child Rights Advocacy Center, the newest addition to MC’s roster of advocacy centers. The Child Rights Advocacy Center aims to educate the MC community on safeguarding children’s rights and to promote the cause to other communities beyond MC.

On behalf of Miriam College, the Alumni Engagement Office thanks all alumni who actively participated in this first ever Alumni Town Hall. The school values the alumni community’s perspectives and recommendations that contribute to our common goal of making our alma mater Miriam College a safer learning environment for all.
