CENTER FOR PEACE EDUCATION

The Center for Peace Education is one of Miriam College’s three advocacy centers. We promote a culture of peace through peace education and advocacy. To reach peace, we teach peace. Peace courses are offered in the College and peace concepts and values are infused in certain subjects in MC’s basic education units where students are trained in conflict resolution and peer mediation. Annually, Miriam College celebrates the International Day of Peace and the Mindanao Week of Peace. On both occasions, members of the community organize activities that raise awareness on peace issues of the day. During the Mindanao Week of Peace, community members raise funds to support peace-related causes as well as our twin school in Mindanao, the Rajah Muda High School.

OUR MISSION

To promote a culture of peace which is a set of values, modes of behavior and ways of life that reflects respect for life and for human dignity, rejects violence in all its forms, prevents violent conflicts, and recognizes the importance of cooperation, tolerance, dialogue, and women’s participation

  • BUILDING A CULTURE OF PEACE

We take inspiration from the UNESCO Declaration that a culture of peace is essentially a set of values and modes of behavior that respects life and human dignity, upholds human solidarity and cooperation, rejects violence in all its forms and prevents violent conflicts by tackling their root causes.

  • CAMPAIGNING FOR NONVIOLENT SOCIAL CHANGE

We believe that nonviolence is the ethical, practical, and effective pathway towards creating positive social change.

  • CHALLENGING PREJUDICE AND TEACHING TOLERANCE

It has been asserted that humans have a propensity toward prejudice, particularly against those who are considered the “different other,” which in turn, has resulted in various forms of exclusion, intolerance, and discrimination. We educate educators and youth to challenge prejudice and social exclusion.
