The Center for Peace Education (CPE) assisted the United Nations, through the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders (GNWP), in soliciting perspectives of civil society on the topic of Sustaining Peace.
The United Nations is currently working on defining a new “Sustaining Peace” agenda, which highlights efforts to sustain peace needed at all stages of conflict – before, during, and after. CPE interviewed key informants that included Miriam College academic-advocates Dr. Loreta N. Castro, Prof. Aurora De Dios, and Dr. Jasmin Nario-Galace. Members of Moro and indigenous communities were included on the list of key informants. CPE also conducted three Focus Group Discussions in Manila (16 July 2018), Davao (26 July 2018) and Bacolod (14 August 2018) attended by members of civil society and community organizations. The discussion revolved around factors that facilitate sustainable peace in local communities and practices that should be strengthened or built upon by the Sustainable Peace agenda. The study is also currently being conducted in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burundi, Canada, Colombia, Liberia, Libya, Mali, Mexico, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Sweden, Syria, and Ukraine.
The results of the action research will be presented in the United Nations through GNWP and UN Women by the end of 2018.
