NSTP, CFA reach out to upland farmers and indigenous people

Taking advantage of the mid-year break in the Higher Education Unit (HEU), the National Service Training Program (NSTP) Department and the College Faculty Association (CFA) conducted two outreach activities. Led by NSTP Department Coordinator Dr. Vicky Apuan and CFA President Lynda Garcia, the Association officers and some faculty members had an interaction with the upland farmers of Laiban, Tanay, Rizal and with the Aetas of Camachile, Floridablanca, Pampanga. The Environmental Studies Institute (ESI) coordinated and facilitated the visit to Laiban.

The group turned over the ginger presser to the members of the Leyban Small Famers Association for their ginger tea production. In time for the opening of classes, school supplies were distributed to their children who are scholars of the ESI.

In Camachile, the group also distributed school supplies, old clothes and shared food to Aeta children. These in-kind donations were procured by the NSTP students through the money that they earned from various in-campus projects during the second semester. The old clothes were donated by the HEU Office for Student Affairs.

Both the communities of Laiban and Camachile have been long-time partners of Miriam College for student exposures, outreach activities, and service-learning projects. The ESI manages the 180 hectares of forest land in Laiban in partnership with the the Leyban Small Farmers Association.
