President’s Challenge Exhibit showcases students’ big ideas

The winners of the first President’s Challenge turned their proposals into prototypes for exhibit at the MC-Henry Sy, Sr. Innovation Center (MC-HSSIC) last February 20-24.

Featured were the works of the 10 winners who successfully pitched their ideas to a panel of judges, led by Miriam College President Dr. Rosario O. Lapus, during the President’s Challenge event held last year. The winning proposals were: DefendHer (College of Arts and Sciences), HABI (College of Business, Entrepreneurship, and Accountancy), The Nest (College of Education), Crowd Management (MC High School), The Pulses (MC Middle School), Kawaii Potato Squad (MC Lower School), Super Rainbow Kids (Child Study Center), Garbage Collector Beta-Bot (MC-Southeast Asian Institute for the Deaf), and Tubang Bakod (Miriam Adult Education).

The winning groups were all given a seed funding to implement their projects. They were also encouraged to use the laboratories and tools available at the HSSIC.

Dr. Lapus personally visited each exhibit, interviewing the students about their experiences and testing some of the prototypes.

The President’s Challenge is in line with the school’s thrust in innovation and celebrates the ability of students to generate big, bold ideas that lead to innovation and social impact, The competition was initiated by Dr. Rosario O. Lapus and implemented through the HSSIC led by Dr. Edizon Fermin, director for Innovation Development.

The Challenge involves pitching ideas that are research-based and solution-focused in the areas of Science and Math, Arts and Design, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Entrepreneurship.
