MC Psychology Department Chairperson conferred as a Focusing Trainer with specialization in Focusing-Oriented Expressive Arts (FOAT®)

Dr. Grace Brillantes-Evangelista, Professor and Chairperson of the Miriam College Department of Psychology, was conferred as a Focusing Trainer with specialization on Focusing-Oriented Expressive Arts (FOAT®) on November 29, 2019 by the International Focusing Institute based in New York and the Focusing and Expressive Arts Institute in Santa Rosa, CA, USA. She has been a Certified Focusing-Oriented Expressive Arts (FOAT®) Facilitator/Practitioner since 2018. Her training of focusing-oriented expressive arts began in 2016.

Noted for her arts-based psychotherapy and psychosocial interventions, Dr. Evangelista’s clinical practice has been guided by the principles of Focusing-oriented expressive arts (FOAT®). Focusing-oriented expressive arts is the practice of naturally listening to one’s inner experiences while centering at the present moment using different modalities of the arts. When used in psychotherapy, it guides clients to direct their attention to their body’s inner sensations which may reveal thoughts and feelings that they are unable to express concretely. Such sensing is called, “felt sense”. Such felt sense can be expressed into various forms of arts, which can help cultivate a deep sense of awareness that may lead to authenticity, mutual respect, compassion, and healing.
