MIRIAM COLLEGE TRUTH AND JUSTICE COMMITTEE | Statement No. 2

MIRIAM COLLEGE TRUTH AND JUSTICE COMMITTEE | Statement No. 2

The Truth and Justice Committee of Miriam College has studied - and continues to study - the allegations and complaints filed via MC’s dedicated email: safespaces@mc.edu.ph, as well as those lodged via Twitter and Facebook and the various statements issued by the MC Community. We are likewise reviewing the summations of the Town Hall Meetings conducted by the School with the various sectors of the MC Community, in our effort to mindfully listen to all our stakeholders.

We have also met separately with Dr. Noel Racho, Director of the Human Resources Division of the Miriam College Administration Team, and with Dr. Tesa Casal de Vela, Executive Director of the MC Women and Gender Institute (WAGI), in order to gain insight not only on the process for handling complaints, but also on the training and preparation of the faculty, especially in relation to gender sensitivity, sexual harassment, and gender-fair education.

The study of existing policies, rules, and processes and their compliance with existing laws and ordinances are currently ongoing - in addition to the review of the current mechanisms for the filing and processing of complaints.

In order to properly investigate the complaints involving gender-based sexual harassment, the Committee has been reconstituted as an institutional Ad Hoc Committee on Decorum and Investigation (CODI) to investigate and conduct hearings on the cases, aligned with due process for all those involved. For this purpose, additional members shall be joining the TJC in representation of the different stakeholders in the community (i.e. the administration, faculty, parents, and students) in accordance with the Safe Spaces Act.

We encourage social media information sharers and other concerned members of the MC Community to lodge complaints and concerns via the Safe Spaces email. This will allow the Committee to gather the information needed to act on your concerns, and to adhere to the tenets of due process.

We continue to seek your prayers, patience, and cooperation as we continue our mission to mindfully listen to the concerns of the MC Community to ensure that Miriam College shall truly be a safe and nurturing environment for its community.
