IS launches its Migration & Development Webinar Series

The Department of International Studies of Miriam College launches its Migration and Development Webinar Series last November 6, 2020. The series aims to examine the linkages and interconnected of migration and development in the context of globalization processes, highlighting key issues in migration and exploring a critical analysis of both the positive and negative dimensions of migration.

The first part of the series featured topics on Philippine Labor Migration Policy and Feminization of Migration as well the Social Cost of Migration. Dr. Jean Franco from the UP Political Science Department talked about the historical context of migration in the country, the different types of migration and the many issues confronted by Filipino migrants especially during this time of the pandemic. While Prof. Aurora de Dios showed the implication of migration to communities and families left behind and how these issues remain unresolved.

The participants expressed their frustrations on how migration is overlooked especially at the local level. This is evident in our lack of clear and strong reintegration program as well as financial literacy/education for migrants and their families.

The forum concluded with a common frame that migration is not something new, yet there are emerging issues that that must be dealt with through a multi-stakeholders’ approach with the inclusion of local government authorities as crucial actors in migration governance.
