IS students participate in the 2021 ASEAN Young Leaders Program

Out of the 2,255 applications from the 10 ASEAN Member States for the ASEAN Youth Leaders Program, six students from Miriam College Higher Education Unit of the Department of International Studies were selected. These were Danielle M. Noche, Angelica Therese Boquiren, Zoe Nicola Verzo, Irish Shayne Francisco, Sofia Adasa, and Carriza Arambulo.

ASEAN Youth Leadership Programme is a leadership development program, where youths from all over the ASEAN region are gathered to discuss and learn cross-boundary leadership and respond to the 2021 challenge: How can ASEAN’s young leaders build a future-ready and resilient ASEAN community? It was divided into two parts: the first part was held through an online learning platform where participants undertake an online learning course and had the opportunity to interact with their fellow ASEAN youth. The second part selected 224 young leaders, wherein Zoe, Irish, Sofia, and Carriza were able to attend. It was a 4-day Zoom program that allowed selected participants to explore, learn, collaborate, and challenge their leadership and innovation skills to bring change.

During the 4-day program, participants were divided into 14 groups, with each group tasked with developing unique and insightful suggestions addressing their respective sub-themes to help ASEAN become more resilient and future-ready. Sub-themes tackled include: digital economy, employability and skills, entrepreneurship, environment & sustainability, future of workplace, inclusive society, mental well-being. Each group presented their concept to the invited panelists from National Youth Council, Singapore Institute of Technology, East Asia, and Pacific who provided critical comments for the concept's improvement.

AYLP 2021 was organized by Common Purpose in partnership with the National Youth Council of Singapore and the Singapore Institute of Technology. The leadership program aims to provide young leaders across the ASEAN region to develop cultural intelligence, establish harmonious relationships, and work collaboratively across cultures. This year’s program aims to generate game-changing ideas for ASEAN’s future, learn about leadership and driving change, and develop network-driven and engaged young leaders who will help take ASEAN towards the future. By: Noche, Boquiren, Verzo, Francisco, and Arambulo
