Miriam College Shares Good Peace Education Practices in the ASEAN-IPR and Philippine HEIs Virtual Learning Exchange

The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU), in partnership with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ Institute for Peace & Reconciliation (ASEAN-IPR), organized a Virtual Learning Exchange between ASEAN-IPR and Philippine Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) on Peace Education. Held on June 6, the event featured Miriam College (MC) and Mindanao State University's (MSU) good practices in promoting peace education in their institutions.

Representing MC, Dr. Loreta N. Castro, founding Director of the Center for Peace Education, shared the different ways MC has integrated peace in the institution, including offering peace subjects, integrating peace into existing courses, and marking peace-related days. She also provided the adoption of a restorative student discipline policy and a whole school approach as an organizing framework. For MSU, Dr. Jovar Pantao, Director of the Institute of Peace and Development in Mindanao, talked about their offering of the subject, Fundamentals of Peace Education; using the KALINAW (Kumonekta, Ambagan, LInawin, Nilayin, Aksyonan at Wastuhin) learning methodology and engagements with their external community as some ways they promote peace education.

The ASEAN-IPR and the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) also conveyed their efforts to promote peace/peace education. The former shared its Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and youth projects, their discussion series and working papers series on peace and conflict resolution. On the other hand, CHED talked about its efforts, including the CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 1 Series of 2019, "Integration of Peace Studies/Education into the Relevant Higher Education Curricula," and the initiative of creating the Technical Working Group on Indigenous People and Peace Studies/Education. They also noted their capacity-building program on Peace Education and CMO No. 42 series of 2021, "Suggested Guiding Principles and Practices on Peace Education/Studies for Higher Education Institutions, " both done in collaboration with Miriam College.

The event was attended by over a hundred participants and was graced with key messages from OPAPRU Secretary Carlito G. Galvez, Jr. and the Executive Director of ASEAN-IPR, H.E. I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja.
