The Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service (TOWNS) Foundation, Inc. in partnership with Miriam College (MC) sponsored Woman Up! Passion and Purpose in the Nation’s Service Event last March 30, 2023 at the Henry Sy Sr. Innovation Center.
The five notable TOWNS awardees, MC alum and broadcast journalist Chiara Zambrano; actress and teacher Boots Anson Roa-Rodrigo; molecular biologist Dr. Pia Bagamasbad; marine scientist Dr. Laura David; and community pantry founder Patricia “Patreng” Non, shared their stories on their career paths, the challenges they faced in attaining their goals, and their passion and purpose that helped them in their service to the country. The event was hosted by marine conservationist and TOWNS Awardee Anna Oposa. Our ALS (Alternative Learning System), Junior High School, Senior High School, and Hotel and Restaurant Services students from the MC Skills Development and Technical Education Center (SDTEC) participated actively in the Q & A and breakout session.
During the breakout session, the SDTEC students’ insights about empowerment, goal setting, and focusing on one’s passion were deepened with the help of the different TOWNS Awardees who served as facilitators. Josyl, an 8th Grade student, shared that she learned that focus is the key to overcoming obstacles to achieve one’s dreams.
Inclusivity is another take-away that inspired the SDTEC students. MJ, a Grade 12 trans student, expressed how “representation is very important”. For her, a positive and inclusive environment helps not only women, but everyone to have equal opportunity in achieving one’s dreams. Meanwhile, Nicolette, a Grade 11 student who is deaf, expressed that the session boosted her confidence and also strengthened acceptance of learners who are deaf. “Fairness with genders and inspiration to others are the ones that really struck with me…”
