PROFESSIONAL MASTER IN

Special Education

The Professional Master in Special Education is a professional master’s degree program that is learner-centered and designed to develop the knowledge, attitude, values, competencies and skills of SPED teachers, practitioners, and educational leaders on the assessment, intervention, and medical components of Special Education.

This program enables the graduate students to acquire necessary practice-based experiences through immersion in conducting and providing assessment and appropriate intervention by applying clinical approaches, validated practices and methods.

Program Goals:
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge, attitude, skills and competence in addressing the needs of different special learners in the classroom, home, day care, hospital, therapy clinic, and other related settings.
  • Develop an understanding of the educational and intervention programs for students with unique needs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in conducting applied research projects and programs responsive to the development of special education.
  • Apply clinical approaches, strategies and methods in conducting assessment, monitoring and intervention in special education.

What Will I Study?

Below are some of the topics and core courses that you will take:

Analysis and application of clinical approaches, strategies, and methods in special education to facilitate assessment and intervention processes.
Development and utilization of assessment tools for the identification, monitoring and evaluation of students with special needs by applying principles, approaches, strategies, and methods in special education assessment.
Survey and critical review of behavior, attitude, skills, and coping strategies of learners with cognitive disabilities. Utilization of assessment strategies, methods and tools to evaluate the learners’ status, answer their needs and provide them with appropriate intervention programs that will facilitate their acquisition of necessary life skills.
Survey and critical review of behavior, attitude, skills, and coping strategies of learners with sensory and physical disabilities. Utilization of assessment strategies, methods and tools to evaluate the learners’ status, answer their needs and provide them with appropriate intervention programs that will facilitate their acquisition of necessary life skills.
Survey and critical review of behavior, attitude, skills, and coping strategies of learners with emotional and behavioral disabilities. Utilization of assessment strategies, methods and tools to evaluate the learners’ status, answer their needs and provide them with appropriate intervention programs that will facilitate their acquisition of necessary life skills.
Survey and critical review of behavior, attitude, skills, and coping strategies of learners with language, communication and learning disabilities. Utilization of assessment strategies, methods and tools to evaluate the learners’ status, answer their needs and provide them with appropriate intervention programs that will facilitate their acquisition of necessary life skills.
Analysis and development of curriculum and programs responsive to the needs and situations of gifted and talented learners.
Critical review and analysis of transition education for learners with mild and moderate disabilities and the development of responsive curricular and intervention programs.

    The special project is practice-based where the student applies learned understandings, concepts, values, competencies, and skills on Special Education. Each student may choose to work on a project, or an action research related to the students’ field of specialization. All these with the guidance of a professor.
