Master of Education in Special Needs and Inclusive Education

SPED Generalist Track

The Master of Education in Special Needs and Inclusive Education (SPED Generalist Track) program is a practice-based degree that focuses on the generalist practice of Special Needs Education in self-contained settings. It is designed to develop professionals who have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of disability and intervention. Through immersion and extensive portfolio-building, this program integrates theory into practice, and culminates in a capstone project.

Program Goals
  • Equip special education professionals with the necessary competencies, attitudes, and values to effectively educate students with a diverse range of needs in self-contained special educational placements across the lifespan
  • Prepare special education professionals to become agents of positive change as they translate current frameworks of educating learners with special needs to pedagogy using validated practices supported by research in the field

What Will I Study?

This course enhances your skills in analyzing curriculum designs and curriculum development models.
This course provides opportunities for you to analyze instructional theories, instructional design models, and instructional approaches.
This course analyzes the legal, historical, social, and medical frameworks of disability studies. Philosophies, theories, and interventions specific to special needs and inclusive education are also highlighted.
This course teaches you to analyze and implement administrative and curricular frameworks that lead to a deeper understanding of the theory, philosophy, and rationale of early intervention, including early identification and screening of possible disability or delay.
This course aims to teach you how to analyze and assess cases of learners with additional needs, taking into consideration the requirements of traditional and inclusive settings.
This course trains you in the analysis and practice of curriculum programming for children with additional educational needs by focusing on individualization of educational content and strategies in self-contained settings.
This course covers principles and applications in transition curriculum planning and pre-vocational training for persons with disabilities in preparation for lifelong learning and employment.
This course introduces transition-level special needs educators to the organizational structure, behavior, and management processes of various work sites so that they can effectively ease Persons with Disabilities into employment settings.
This course explains principles and strategies to support both Persons with Disabilities and their work sites in securing and maintaining employment posts.
This course engages you in a critical survey of methods in educational research and data analysis techniques appropriate for teacher research, setting of research directions and identification of research ideas in education.

This program is implemented using a modular delivery mode.

  • The Special Project is practice-based and is accomplished as you take the different specialization courses. You are assigned to a mentor and an adviser (content and process specialists) who will closely supervise the process of project-making and writing of the paper.

    Students who are not currently teaching will be immersed in partner schools.
